The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
